Since the beginning of time, man has rallied around an open fire. Things are no different at Peasant, a mainstay since the last century for both those who like to eat and those who like to cook. With a rustic interior that puts everyone at ease, Peasant serves Italian food roaring with flavor from a good searing in custom-made, hardwood-fueled brick oven. It was built and designed by the chef and owner Frank DeCarlo, in 1999, and he still tends it himself. (194 Elizabeth St. 212-965-9511.)
