Joe Allen

This famed Broadway hangout has been serving comfort food with a side of humor since it was opened, in May of 1965, by the former barkeep whose name is written on the door. In its first year, the Broadway show “Kelly” closed after only one performance, and the cast gave the show’s poster to Allen to display. Allen has since lined the restaurant’s walls with an ongoing exhibition of Broadway flops, and it can be as much fun to look back on past failures as it is to tuck into the meatloaf. A martini helps. (Joe Allen, 326 W. 46th St. 212-581-6464.)
