This East Village favorite has been serving classic red-sauce Italian since 1908. The number of owners since then can be counted on less than one hand. What’s harder to count are the pounds of wax from the candle that has been burning there since the end of Prohibition, or thereabouts. John’s is somewhat famous for it. That and a vegan menu. Seriously. It has to be one of the only classic red-sauce joints with seitan (wheat gluten) meat substitute on the menu. Only in New York kids, only in New York. (John’s of 12th Street, 302 E. 12th St. 212-475-9531.)
